Los Angeles, CA — On Wednesday, Bank of America experienced a significant outage, leaving many users across the U.S. unable to access their accounts through the bank’s mobile app and online banking services. Customers in cities like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Seattle reported seeing error messages stating that their “accounts and balances were temporarily unavailable,” with some accounts showing a zero balance.
According to DownDetector, the outage began around 9:30 a.m. PST and saw more than 20,000 reports by mid-morning. Affected users took to social media to express their concerns, sharing screenshots of their Bank of America accounts showing zero balances. Many customers also reported issues with Zelle, Bank of America’s digital payment service, with failed transactions and insufficient funds messages.
“Five of my accounts show zero balance, and I can’t get through to customer service,” wrote one frustrated user on Reddit. The website’s live chat support was also reportedly unavailable during the outage, leading to increased frustration among Bank of America’s customers.
This isn’t the first time Bank of America has faced service disruptions. Earlier this year, in January 2023, the bank experienced an issue where customers reported missing money from their accounts and Zelle transactions. As a result, some users have expressed doubts about the bank’s reliability, urging others to switch banks.
Bank of America has not yet provided an official explanation for the outage. However, some users have reported that services are slowly being restored, with fewer outage reports by the afternoon. The bank’s website continues to show account balances from the previous day, advising users to “sign in again later to check your current balance.”
For now, customers are encouraged to monitor their accounts closely and take screenshots of their transaction history as a precaution. Bank of America has not released any updates on what caused the disruption, and customers await a formal statement.
